December 29th - The approach of the new year brings a close to Keva's Fall 2009 Kitten Diary. We are very happy we sent our kittens off to such wonderful loving homes. They have given us the gifts of  friendships and wonderful memories. We will fondly look back on this record of their development. I will add photos of them grown up, when we receive them from their families, to our Where Are They Now? page.

December 27th -Vixen went home to Rutland Vermont today. His family decided to keep his name as Vixen in honor of the time of year and the famous reindeer he was named for. He is joining a Siamese girl who is in need of a little playmate.

Vixen eleven weeks old

December 25th - Merry Christmas - Vixen has been a model kitten. He has not once been interested in climbing the Christmas tree or trying to get the ornaments. He is a real sweetie pie and has started searching my face. He is fascinated with my eyes when I blink them. He loves playing Da Bird and takes turns with Fen. Fen has to be the leader and have the upper hand during attack play but Vixen gives as good as he gets. I have seen him go back and attack Fen over and over after he cries for help when she has him pinned. He has a little voice. A couple of times I heard what I thought was something squeaking and went to see what it was only to find Vixen sitting in the living room calling for company. He had just awoken and needed to find us. He likes to come up on the bed at night. He is very like Maeve in that he likes to sit on my legs on hip. I've tried to move him up closer to my head but he always goes back down to my hips and curls up touching me.

December 19th - We said goodbye to Prancer on yesterday. She is now called Nisa and is at home in Manhattan, NY. We had a nice play session before her family arrived. Fen will be with us until after Christmas. He is enjoying his new status but Fen keeps him humble. In the afternoon they had in the bag time then everyone wanted to be in the nest with Vixen. He's been a very good boy. He watched while we decorated our tree and when I vacuumed up the fallen needles he wasn't the least bit afraid of the vacuum and stayed in his nest under the tree the whole time.

Vixen is on my lap and Prancer is by my right hand while Fen watches.

We stack the nests because it makes a nice deeper bed. Fen wanted to sleep with her buddy, lol.

We need a bigger bag.

Fen takes up too much room

When I put the white skirt under the tree it went over the edge of Vixen's nest. He was alone and curled up under the edge. The next time I looked over Grandma Maeve was in the nest with him.

December 18th - We've heard from Blitzen's Meowmy that she is adjusting very well. Libby tells us," I'm really pleased with how well she's adjusting. She follows me around and responds to my call already. She does want me nearby which of course, I love. We're learning to speak each others' language. She already complained at having a petting session in the sunshine cut shorter than she wanted and got me to come back and give her more. 'Lots of stretching, rolling, purring and general luxuriating in the heat and sun! Very sweet! She's smart; I can see I'll have no trouble teaching her to demand her "sunny massage" sessions, lol!" She also slept in bed through the night.

We've also heard from Cupid's family. At first Cupid watched homework from the safety of under furniture. Cathy says, "Sabastian is doing great! He finally came out to play last night. Came right into my lap. We played for a half hour and then I went to bed. He used the litter pan and even ate last night. He was up meowing at about 6 am (yesterday). He wanted attention and someone to play with him. J. gladly got up and played with him. We introduced him to Lola the dog again. Lola was very shy and Sabastian hissed at him a few times. That was about it. He’s definitely getting used to the room and not hiding anymore. I’ve opened up the door to the room and put a gate at the end of the hallway, so we’ll see if he ventures out." And todays report, "Sabastian is doing great today. I removed the gate and now he’s allowed to roam freely. He has wandered into a couple of rooms but always runs back to my office. He knows he’s safe in here. He and the dog are curiously aware of each other but no posturing. I think they’re both thinking about playing with each other. I know my dog can’t wait to play."

Prancer and Vixen continue to do well here. I've noticed that when Prancer plays with Fen she yells a lot. I've been watching them closely and I think she is complaining whenever Fen gets the upper hand. I don't think she is hurting her but I call out to Fen to stop just in case. They both came up on the bed last night. Prancer doesn't seem to mind being under the cover but Vixen moved to be out from under right away. He may not be an under cover cat, lol. I have noticed a change in Vixen now that he can be "the boss". He is more outgoing now that his bossy brothers are gone. When our son arrived home from college Vixen ran right up to him to say hello. They were playing in the sunny dinning room this morning. I was able to get some nice photos.

December 16th - The kittens have recovered well. They self regulated their activity level and are now ramping up their playing. We are working at keeping them from taking big jumps. We have said good buy to Rudolph, Blitzen and Cupid as they went to join their new families. The kittens have begun to seek us out and crawl up on the bed so we are happy they will be home to bond with their forever families.

Rudolph was the first to leave. His new home is with a retired Siamese breeder in Woburn, Massachusetts. He is now called ShadowHeart. We've heard back from his family. They tell us he was not phased at all with moving, "I can't tell you enough what a GREAT little guy he is!!! We absolutely love him!! He is a total joy!! Not scared of anything....Wants to be held by all of us! Wants to constantly be with us, he doesn't go and hide or anything....Last night he fell asleep with John on the sofa...right on John's chest....sucking up all John's body heat...He kept nudging himself up closer and closer to John's neck and face...Just snuggling in as close as he could get!...I just can't stop saying how good he is!! I thought for sure that the first few days would be hard on him, but no way...You would think he's been there all along!.....What a wonderful Christmas gift we have received after loosing our special boy. [19yr old seal point]"

Our little reindeer Blitzen went for her first flying lesson. She left this morning to fly home with her owner to the Jersey Shore (New Jersey). She is now called Kaia Alice. The flight crew allowed her to have her own seat on the plane. She had a good flight. Her new Meowmy rubbed her ears during the decent so she was calm and relaxed. When we talked she was running about checking out her new home's nooks and crannies.

Cupid was just picked up. He is now called Sabastian Cupid and is at home with his family in Wilmington, Massachusetts.

December 12th - The kittens have been resting most of the day recovering from surgery and healing. Their incisions look good. Both girls have a little bit of swelling. Vixen's family came for a quiet visit early in the afternoon. While they were sleeping we brought our tree in. All the cats were curious...no climbers yet.

December 11th - nine weeks old - This morning I awoke to monkeys jumping on the bed, lol. Three of the kittens were playing with each others tails. Each one pouncing on the tail of the other. Rudy kept wanting to crawl into the space between the pillows to sleep but his siblings wanted to play. I sat up and he crawled into my lap and fell asleep. As much as I wanted not to disturb him I had to get up to keep the other kittens from wrestling and running about. I tried to gently move him to the bed, it didn't work and he woke up. I opened the window blinds and sat by the kittens. Rudy again crawled into my lap and fell asleep, lol. After breakfast I was able to get some nicer photos for their 9 week birthday.

December 10th - Today the kittens went in for their alter surgery. We really appreciate that Dr. Schaefer went out of her way to do a special surgery day for us so we can get these babies into their homes before the holidays. They all come home in hyper drive. Oy they were a busy bunch. The up side was none of them wanted to be mean and beat up on the others. They were happy to play with toys. Every time I thought they were winding down and going to sleep one would wake up and get them all going again, lol. Around 11pm all three boys were curled asleep and the girls were in the bed room calming, they were settling down...then I hear a kitten calling from the living room. It's Rudy and everyone is up and going again, lol. Then he needs momma and no one wants to miss out on a little comfort. Slowly they all start to crash again. They are just like little toddlers exhausted but unable to settle down and sleep. Finally I have everyone alseep and come in to write emails to their families. Right as I begin I hear a tiny voice calling out from the living room. I head in to see who needs help. I see Blitzen and Prancer sitting awake under the cat tree, they are calm. I ask who was calling and from the opposite end of the sofa Rudy come running squeaking to me. His voice is a little horse from the tube used during surgery. He is fine. I wonder if the meds are making him have dreams? I get them all back to sleep and finish the day.

December 7th - We've had all our families visit their kittens over the past weekends. Today they have been helping me with my Holiday decorations. They are having a great time playing in a sea of tissue paper. As I unwrap things I drop it on the floor in a pile. They jump into it like a pile of fall leaves, lol. I sweep it back into a pile and they destroy it again and again.

Is there room in there for me too?

December 3rd - Today the kitten visited Dr. Schaefer and received their first vaccination. They were all examined from tip to tail and received an all healthy. The kittens were all in one large carrier together and Mum Keva and Fen were in another large carrier together.  Keva and Fen were also due for vaccinations. Prancer was a bit vocal while waiting. She upset her mum who couldn't see why she was talking so much so I put the carriers door to door. When out of the carrier she stopped talking, lol. All of the kittens did very well with their vaccinations. No one cried out at being stuck. When we arrived home I expected them to sleep most of the day but they acted almost like nothing had happened. I did find them doing comfort suckling on several occasions. I've been working on putting up Holiday decorations when they are sleeping. When they are awake they are very good about not getting into anything. They did help me by pointing out some of my icicles fell on the floor, lol.

December 1st - All the kitten have discovered how to get up on the bed. I awoke this morning with Cupid and Vixen asleep against my legs with Mum and Grandma. Blitzen was on my right and the other two were wrestling next to my head, lol. Once they realized I was awake play time broke out in full force and I had no excuse to stay in bed this morning.

November 30th - Today is our last weigh in the kittens are all reaching 2 pounds. This evening all the kittens woke up from their nap and came into the kitchen. I decided they were comfortable enough with the room to move their food and water bowls next to the big kitty bowls. Before bed time I brought each one in to the bowls just to make sure they knew I had moved it.  Blitzen figured out how to get up on our bed. Tonight she came up and curled up against me to sleep. When I pet her she moved away so I couldn't touch her. Then she came back and curled up against me again. I understood what she was telling me and resisted loving on her. She wanted to be close but wanted to sleep. I was keeping her awake. My petting her was to stimulating, lol.

November 27th & 28th - seven weeks old - When I woke up this morning the boys were lounging by the east window and the sun was out. I grabbed my camera and got a few good photos. I started to lose the light before I got all the kitten but these photos are still better then any I have taken lately....the eye color is their natural color in sunlight I have not retouched it. You may have noticed that none of these kittens have any whiskers. Grandma Maeve was a whisker nibbler when she groomed her kittens and she passed this trait on to Keva. She nibbles off the whisker when making she their faces are nice and clean. When they leave us they will grow a very nice set of whiskers, lol. Finola (also Maeve's daughter) who is more conscientious of cleaning her kittens then Keva, does not nibble off her kittens whiskers.

November 21st  Well nice birthday photos went a bit wild. I didn't have cooperative subjects. They were more interested in running about and playing, lol. By the time I got to Vixen he was curled up asleep. I apologize for the photos. I look at them and even I think they don't look like the kittens....The two face photos of Prancer and Cupid had me double checking myself. Neither one looks like either kitten....but they are and these photos are better then no photos. Well will try again for better ones next week.

November 20th - six weeks old - I allowed the kittens to stay in the living room for the night. I heard them up early playing. When I got up and went to say good morning they were all back in bed sleeping. I looked over the back of the sofa and Cupid peeped good morning. I reached down to stroke him and he rolled over for me to rub his tummy. I rubbed each kitten and let them go back to sleep. All the kittens are much more comfortable playing in the living room. Tonight it was Blitzen's turn to haul. She got a hold of the Marabou in her mouth and was running around with it growling. She had it wrapped around the back of her neck. She was so cute doing her best Eva Gabor imitation...or should it be Zsa Zsa. Prancer took a back seat tonight. It is interesting to watch them play as they ebb back and forth testing who should be dominate. The two girls seem to be leaders right now but Rudolph is right in there with them. He was making the most noise tonight and Prancer stayed in the background. Cupid picked up a chunk of feather that came off the bird and was running around with it in his mouth growling and pawing at nothing in front of him. When the eager ones got tired Cupid came out all wound up and ready for his turn, lol. He grabbed the bird and tried to haul it off for himself. As I played with him it was funny to watch Vixen. He clearly sees Cupid more of an equal or buddy. Each time I would get Cupid to chase a toy Vixen was right behind him prancing at his feet teasing him. But if Cupid was not distracted by the toy Vixen would back off and act like he wasn't doing anything, lol....just like a little brother. I would get Cupid playing again and Vixen was right there at his heals.

I'll try to get some better close up birthday photos in the morning.

November 19th - Keva has been wanting the kitten to move out of my office but they have been happy to play in the warm sun. It is so cute to watch her when I open the run. She talks and coos to them to come along with her. She has been able to get them to follow but they will run back to find siblings to play with. We decided to help her out a little last night. We took all the kittens into the living room so they could begin to become familiar and comfortable with the area. It was very interesting to watch. The girls were very bold and Rudolph was interested but cautious. Vixen wanted to stay under the cat tree and nap, lol. Cupid was very reserved. He tried to run back "home" several times but we encouraged him to come back. He snooped behind the chair and was happy to climb up the little condo. He was pretty much glued to that area.

To relax them with play I got out Da Bird. Prancer was first to run after and capture the bird. She picked it up and tried to run off with it. LOL She will be a hauler. I tried to get it back from her and she started growling, lol. Its so cute when you hear this big growl coming from such little kittens. This bird was hers and she wasn't sharing. I tugged it loose and continued to play with her. After a few times she realized it would come back and she lost that serious growl to the fun of the sport. She kept trying to walk backward pulling the bird to her unknown destination. Then Rudolph decided his sisters treasure was very interesting and  it was his turn to be bold. He ran in grabbed it and tried to run off with it. He also growled when I wanted it back, lol. Blitzen wanted a turn but her siblings monopolized  the bird so she was happy to investigate and play with a ball. Rudy also played with a lamb cat toy hauling it around in his mouth...he's going to be a hauler too. Any time they felt there might be a threat they would run to the condo or under the sofa and peek out. I could see that Cupid was very interested in the bird also. When I would make it fly near him he would perk up. I could tell those little wheels were working on how he could get it, lol, but he didn't want to leave the safety of the condo just yet. I got out grandma's favorite toy for him. A string with a light pull chain attached to it. This was just as much fun as a bird for Cupid. He wanted to jump over to Keva who was sitting on the chair but wasn't sure. He would wind up his courage then double guess himself and have to start over. He got me worried he would make it so I push the condo over to her, lol. We brought them back to their kitten room for the night.

This morning we removed the run completely and it didn't take long for Keva to talk them all into the living room. I added a clean nest behind the sofa in the corner. They all found it and are napping. Keva has been sitting vigil at the end of the sofa. She finally curled up for her own nap.

November 16th - I opened the run and sat on the floor in the front hall playing with Fen. Prancer came walking out went through the hall and into the living room with out a pause. Once she realized no one was with her she scampered back to my office. Then Blitzen came out into the hall. She wanted to play but snooped around the corners and went back to her siblings. Fen has had supervised play time and she started grooming them too.

November 15th - I put off taking the kitten's 5 week photos on friday because the light was so poor from the overcast sky. It's a little brighter today but still overcast so the photos are really not very good. The color is way off. I The background should be a nice medium blue like the website backfround but it looks a yellowed gray. Remember the fur color and eye color is off too. These will still give you an idea of how the kittens have grown and changed this week. I'll try for better photos as soon as the sky clears up.

I caught Keva and Prancer yesterday in the hall. Keva had pulled open the run and was talking to the kittens and coaxing them to follow her to our bedroom. Keva was so cute I hated having to tell her no and bring Prancer back. After that Keva started checking out the living room. I think she is planning ahead for her next escape plan and final destination, lol.

The color of these photos is NOT true to life...They look awful and  I apologize for them.

November 13th - five weeks old - All the kittens are doing really well with using the litter box. A week more of reinforcement and we will start to let them explore the house a bit. I expanded the run today. They now have access to three fourths of the room. Keva was wanting to move them under our bed again so I moved the family nest under my desk. She seems happy with this protective space.

November 12th - We had a good night with no big messes. I was changing out the litter when everybody decided it was time to go. I didn't even get the training box in place before two kittens were in it. We had a potty party, lol We decided to let Fen come visit and see how well she would play with the kittens. She can play really enthusiastically with the adult cats so I watched her very carefully and if she seemed to excited I picked her up. The kittens weren't quite sure what to think of her. When they puffed at her she didn't react submissively like all the other kittens do, lol. After a short play time  I put her back outside the run. As she walked away along the side of the run Blitzen ran along next to her calling for her to come back....I think. I suppose she could have been taunting her like the old school yard, Nah nah I scared you away, LOL  It was really cute no matter what she was saying. Everyone did really well with using the litter box today. I only had to remind two kittens and put them in the box. They are all starting to make the human connection. Some will crawl into my lap and if I place one on my lap they don't run off. After I had been visiting with their dad I sat down with them and four crawled up on me to smell his scent. Then they all curled up and fell asleep.

Morning wake up potty party.

Hi Fen, Come play with us Meowmy says its o-kay if you're not too rough.

That's Cupid up on my left thigh, Blitzen in the hole, Prancer on my right thigh, and Rudolph on my shins.

Vixen fell asleep right in front of me.

November 11th - This morning showed us the reason we keep the kittens in a run while they learn this stage. We had a really messy family nest and most of the kittens had a bit stuck to their fur too. All the rugs and nests were changed out and Everybody was spot cleaned. and all hard surfaces were cleaned. After getting everything fixed up I sat with the kittens for awhile and two of them crawled into my lap and fell asleep, Rudolph and one of the chocolates. I didn't want to wake it to see which one it was. The kittens are playing hard and are quick to get around. They know to be gentle when mouthing my fingers and I rarely hear a yelp from being bitten anymore. Prancer has climbed up to the second level of the cat tree but hasn't figured out how to come back down yet so I assisted her. I think she would have jumped the tree feet to the ground.

Blitzen and Vixen

Ah hahaha, my brother is unaware.......

...... I puff you bro!

You're squishing my head....

Enough.... please...my head.....noooo don't bite my nose!

How did I end up being a mattress?

November 10th - During the night someone is peeing in the nest on the cat tree. I'm watching them carefully to see who knows to use the box and who doesn't. We are changing out rugs and nests daily for fresh ones....just in case someone has an accident we can't see. Blitzen is a funny girl when she plays. She likes to puff her fur up and tease her brothers into play fighting.

It is Rudolph using the nest. We are working on the litter box use now with him. He left a very nice solid deposit tonight. I placed him in the box so I am hoping he will make the association.

I'm pretty sure all the kittens are now eating kibble. Rudolph and Blitzen crawled into Andrew's lap tonight and fell asleep. The kittens got all their nails trimmed.

Nighty night

November 7th - Today I did some videos. The kittens are a lot more stable on their feet. Still a few wobbles but they've gained a lot of confidence today. The first video I started thinking I would get a cute clip of Vixen's head slowly going down and up until his muscles gave way when he fell completely asleep. Noise from another kitten distracts him and he piles in the fort for a nap. The second video was too large for youtube so I had to cut it into two 8 minute segments. It's just a slice of a typical day for the four week old kittens. We don't have weights for today because we have moved to bi-weekly weigh-ins.

I'm getting ready to publish the diary and have the lights out for bed time for the kittens when I hear a sputtering. Somebody is drinking water. I sneak in to get a photo of Rudolph is drinking from the kitten bowl. His nose gets water in it each time and he sputters it out of his nose, lol. So cute. I hear a drip drip and behind me a kitten just started to pee in the heat register, lol. We swoop to the litter box. While I'm cleaning the register another kitten pees in the family nest, noooo. Another swoop to the box.  Is this some kind of an evil plot? While switching out the nest for a clean one I turn around and Prancer went in the litter box by herself  YEAAAAAH. lol What a nice happy ending to my day. :)

November 6th four week old - The kittens are on track for development. We continue to work with encouraging them to explore and try new things. They are still very cautious. I introduced toys this week. They are starting to paw at them and attack. All the kittens have mystical dancing tails, lol. Their tails make curly  loops and dance about with joy whenever I pet one of them or when they are excited and happy. Prancer was the first kitten to pee in the training litter box but not on her own. I knew she had to go but every time I placed her in the box she wouldn't. I let her dig in the nest next to the box and squat, then I lifted her to the litter box where she went. Her scent will help all of them with identifying the box as the right place to go. They are learning and maturing in baby steps.

Rudolph

Rudolph is a funny elf like sprite when he plays. With a big voice that doesn't match his size.

I think his voice may be the cause of Keva's nervousness. It sounds very much like a call of alarm.

Vixen

Vixen is a sweetie pie and spent part of yesterday snuggled into my neck.

He doesn't enjoy being held up for photos which makes getting a good face photo difficult.

Blitzen

Blitzen is a power house and the most mature at this point. She is starting to come to me to crawl up into my lap.

Prancer

Prancer is a contradiction right now. She likes to pose and watch me and seems very calm yet is quick to retreat. It seems that her bravery is all on her terms. She likes to hang out under the cat tree. I expect her caution to change as she gets more experience. She is right behind Blitzen and I wonder if she will be the next kitten to eat.

Cupid

Cupid is a funny little guy. His big eyes make we want to reach out and pick him up first. They are hypnotic, lol. I think he may have his Mum's nose.

He likes prancing about and climbing up. Whenever he wakes up he calls out to whomever is near.

Prancer rolling on her back.

Just too cute.

Prancer posing pretty

Why wont anybody join me? This stuff is good um num num.

Blitzen is 15.1 ounces = 430.6 grams - up 21.4 grams

Prancer is 1 lb. 2.5 ounces = 526.7  grams - up 10.7 grams

Cupid is 1 lb. .4 ounces = 466 grams - up 10.7 grams

November 5th - Today Keva continued her mutiny and wanting to move the kittens. I stayed with them all day. So far no one is using the pan. I encouraged them but they still don't understand. Keva is on top of keeping them clean. I rearranged the run fence to exclude the corner and added towels to one end to make it more private. I also gave them a small nest to use as a just in case bathroom during the night. Its easier to replace and wash then the big nests. It was wet this morning so I moved it over by the training litter box.

I've been trying to encourage them to eat baby cat kibble also. So far only Blitzen is eating. They watch her and Keva eat but no others want to try it. Blitzen also started to drink water.

Cupid

Vixen

Got you post!

Whatcha' doin' Blitzen?

Nope not gonna try it.

I gots water in my nose.

Afternoon weigh in......

Vixen is 14.6 ounces = 416 grams - up 0 grams

Blitzen is 14.4 ounces = 409.3 grams - down 3.6 grams

Prancer is 1 lb. 2.2 ounces = 516  grams - up 25 grams

Cupid is 1 lb. 0 ounces = 455.5 grams - up 14.2 grams

November 4th - Unfortunately for me the kittens have learned to squat and pee before they explored far enough to find the training litter box. This means they started peeing in the nest last night. This morning Keva, unhappy with this condition, decided to quickly and sneakily use this to her advantage and move them before I knew what was happening, lol. I came in and removed the family nests and got clean ones fresh from the dryer to put in place of them. After placing the nests I realized there was only one kitten left in here, lol. Keva had quickly and quietly moved them out. I found them under my bed and thus our battle began. Not only have I been trying to help the kittens learn the litter box but I have to keep Keva from grabbing them and running off with them. When they first learn to go to the bathroom on their own they are very vocal when its time. Keva has interpreted this wailing as the kittens are under threat and she needs to take them and hide them to protect them. She doesn't get that she needs to help them learn the litter box. I watched one kitten as it started wailing then squatted, I grabbed it and cupped my hand under it,  it continued to pee into my hand. We swooped over to the litter box to finish. While I was busy with this task two other kittens smelled the beginning spot and promptly squatted and peed, lol.  Everyone was placed into the training litter box but I didn't see any light of knowledge appear in their eyes. I switched out another nest. The kittens were very vocal with Mum trying to steal them all the time. I decided to shut her out of the room for a bit to allow the kittens to settle down. They crawled under the wave and one by one fell asleep together. Keva wanted back in so I allowed her to return and check the kittens. Even though they were peacefully sleeping she still grabbed one and hauled it to the closed door. I took it back and it curled up to sleep again. We repeated this scene several times. I've had to sit with Keva all morning to stop her from scruffing a kitten. She seems to be settling down. She is currently nursing them. One of the kittens crawled into the corner nest and began scratching the nest. I'm thinking she was wanting to pee so I took her to the litter box....nothing. We'll keep working at it. I decided to remove the nest that was in the corner. I put a small rug in its place. If they continue to use the corner I will move the training litter box back there. I'm hoping they will learn before I have to because the corner is where Keva feels nesting is safest.

Afternoon weigh in......

Rudolph is 15.6 ounces = 444.8 grams - up 7.1 grams

Vixen is 14.6 ounces = 416 grams - up 14 grams

Blitzen is 14.5 ounces = 412.8 grams - up 7.1 grams

Prancer is 1 lb. 1.25 ounces = 491  grams - up 17.8 grams

Cupid is 15.5 ounces = 441.3 grams - up 3.6 grams

Prancer

Prancer inside the condo attacking the carpet walls. Keva laid down in front and her tail flicked up and down inside. Prancer had great fun attacking and catching her tail.

Rudolph and Comet.

I keep trying to get a good photo of Comets eyes. He has big eyes compared to the other kittens.

November 3rd - One of the chocolate boys just called out in his sleep. He must be dreaming. Keva was eating and stopped to go over and comfort him with some nuzzles and licks. She is making a merr merr noise to him. With Vixen losing weight two days in a row I will be watching him. My guess is that he is biting Mum when he tries to nurse and she is not allowing it. If he doesn't catch on I will help him out. I have been putting him up to the baby cat kibble hoping he will eat.  Blitzen tried the kibble and ate quite a bit for her first try.

Afternoon weigh in......

Rudolph is 15.4 ounces = 437.7 grams - up 10.7 grams

Vixen is 14.1 ounces = 402 grams - down 7.1 grams

Hey, you knocked me over with that lick.

Blitzen yummmy

November 2nd - The kittens front teeth are in and they are starting to bite each other when wrestling. I heard a loud peep this morning when one kitten bit a little too hard. This is an important stage when they connect biting to pain and how not to bite too hard.

Afternoon weigh in......

Rudolph is 15 ounces = 427 grams - up 17.8 grams

Vixen is 14.4 ounces = 409 grams - down 14.3 grams

Blitzen is 14 ounces = 398.6 grams - up 7.1 grams

Prancer is 1lb. .75 ounces = 477  grams - up 25 grams

Cupid is 15 ounces = 427 grams - up 35 grams

November 1st - The kittens are starting to tentatively explore just outside the nest.  Tonight my son called to me and said..."Keva only has two kittens. Where are the others?" I came in to look and they were curled up together inside the little condo. I've watched them slowly sneak around the bottom of the large cat tree. They are trying to be so brave on their first trips away from mom. It's so cute to watch them working to overcome their uncertainty with this new terrain.

Afternoon weigh in......

Rudolph is 14.4 ounces = 409 grams - up 3.5 grams

Vixen is 14.9 ounces = 423.5 grams - up 17.8 grams

Blitzen is 13.75 ounces = 391.5 grams - up 7.1 grams

October 29th - The kittens although alert and moving about well are still staying in the nest. Today I trimmed all their front claws. And put them back into the nest just outside the main nest. They looked about a little but went right back into the main nest. In the coming week I will be encouraging them to explore. They are very interested in me when I visit. Blitzen loves cheek rubs and pushes her face against my finger. I can now tell all the kittens apart by the little differences in them. I have the most trouble with Vixen and Cupid. Vixen's smaller voice helps me know It is him. The three chocolates look very similar you can always tell whick one is Prancer because she has  more undercoat. This makes her body color appear lighter because her pick skin is not showing through as much as the boys. She is also a little bit bigger. Vixen appears to be the smallest but he isn't in weight. He has the finer more refined bones of his grandmother.

Afternoon weigh in......

Rudolph is 13.1 ounces = 373.7 grams - down 3.6 grams

Vixen is 12.9 ounces = 366.6 grams - up 21.4 grams

Blitzen is 12.5 ounces = 355.9 grams - up 10.7 grams

Prancer is 14.1 ounces = 402.1  grams - up 10.7 grams

Cupid is 12.6 ounces = 359.2 grams - up 14.2 grams

October 28th - I've noticed that the kittens are all using three nipples. When everyone is hungry at the same time it leads to lots of noisy fussing and flailing paws. Most of the time they take turns nursing. It is not going to be long before they decide to venture out of the nest. When they hear me talk all their heads pop up and their little faces turn up to see who is talking.

Taking turns nursing, Vixen was being very noisy with her suckling and her little ears were wiggling in rhythm with each suck.

We are getting stronger and more curious.

October 25th - This morning my first task was to move the kitten nest to my office/kitten room. Tucked into the corner behind a small cabinet. I doubled the nest so it is deeper. I've added another nest right outside the main nest just in case anyone crawls out. Keva and I spent the next several hours playing the "I know a better place" game. I had to sit next to the next and stop her from carrying a kitten away for the first three hours. After that I sat at my desk and she tried carrying a kitten to the door every half and hour or so. I added a foam board wall to close off the nest and this helped her to settle down. She hasn't tried to move a kitten since about 6 pm. I think I've won, lol. I skipped taking weights today so I wouldn't upset Keva. We will get them in the morning.

left to right - Blitzen, Rudolph, Cupid, Prancer, and Vixen.

Afternoon weigh in...... This weight was taken Monday morning on the 26th.

Rudolph is 11.5 ounces = 327.4 grams - up 7.1 grams

Prancer is 12.4 ounces = 352  grams - up 7.1 grams

Cupid is 11.25 ounces = 320 grams - up 28.5 grams

October 24th - The kittens are becoming more and more active. When I went in to see them before going to bed Bitzen came crawling out into the middle of the closet. To get then she had to crawl up over a small wall and then crawl about three feet on the carpet. Blitzen has plans her Mum doesn't know about, LOL. Keva began looking about for a new location for her kittens.  I left them in the current location for the night. I want to be able to supervise her after we move them.

Afternoon weigh in......

Rudolph is 11.25 ounces = 320 grams - up 17.8 grams

Vixen is 10.25 ounces = 292 grams - up 7.1 grams

Prancer is 12.1 ounces = 345  grams - up 25 grams

Cupid is 10.25 ounces = 292 grams - up 17.9 grams

October 23rdtwo weeks old - Rudolph made up for yesterdays weight, lol. Vixen is looking a little darker then the other two chocolates. It could be he is just darkening a bit sooner or it may be a hint that he may be a blue point, time will tell. He still looks chocolate at this point.

October 21st - The kittens are moving about very well. They look up and track my voice when I visit. They like to have their heads and cheeks stroked. They all holler when I steal them for weigh in. Vixen has a noticeably smaller voice until he gets worked up. At full volume he has just as big a voice as his siblings.

October 20th - The kittens are becoming much more active. It's making Keva nervous so she decided to relocate them to the side of the cubbies underneath my bar of pants. I moved them to a clean nest in the cubby next to the one she was in. She was comfortable for the afternoon but had moved them again back under the pants in the evening. I gave in and put the clean nest under the pants so the kittens are comfy and not on the carpet. Keva is happy. Now that they are beginning to burn calories by exercising its not unusual to see a dip in weigh gains.

Afternoon weigh in......

Rudolph is 9.5 ounces = 270.5 grams - up 17.7 grams

Vixen is 7.4 ounces = 210 grams - up 14.2 grams

October 16th - one week old - The kittens eyes are starting to peek open. Even though they are opening their eyes are still developing. We will see only black or reflected light (red) for a few weeks. They cannot see us yet. When born their ears are also closed. As these two senses develop we we see them develop an awareness of their surroundings. When holding the kittens for photos they will call out to Mum who is sitting with me watching. I have noticed that Vixen has a smaller voice by comparison. I'm not sure if this is just a difference in the kitten or if she has not yet found her inner lion, lol. Some Siamese do have louder more demanding voices while others have softer gentler voices. It will be interesting to see if she keeps this smaller voice. Rudolph and Blitzen have big voices.

The experiences in a kittens first weeks of life are crucial to the development of how they will feel and react to us and the world around them.

Rudolph one week old

Vixen one week old

Blitzen one week old

This photo is not that good but it shows her face shape.

Blitzen's eyes opening

Prancer one week old

Cupid one week old

Cupids eyes are also opening but he would not allow me to get a photo of them open.

Afternoon weigh in......

RRudolph is 7.6 ounces = 217 grams - up 14.2 grams

VVixen is 6.9 ounces = 195.7 grams - up 14.2 grams

BBlitzen is 7.5 ounces = 213.5 grams - up 10.7 grams

PPrancer is 7.75 ounces = 220.6  grams - up 14.2 grams

CCupid is 6.6 ounces = 188.6 grams - up 14.2 grams

We look for birth weights to be doubled by at one week of age. Weight today minus birth weight equals total gain, calculated in grams. Any number over the birth weight is extra good.

R- 217.084 - 88.969 = 128.115 grams

V- 195.731- 88.969 = 106.762 grams

B- 213.525 - 110.321 = 103.304 grams

P- 220.643 - 103.204 = 117.439 grams

C- 188.614 - 88.969 = 99.645

Blitzen is the largest and most active kitten. I am not worried she did not quite double. She is burning calories gaining strength.

October 15th - six days old - Prancer and Cupid's eyes are beginning to peep open on the inside corners. They are all sleeping to grow and fussing when bothered.

Afternoon weigh in......

RRudolph is 7.1 ounces = 202.8 grams - up 21.4 grams

VVixen is 6.3 ounces = 181.5 grams - up 10.7 grams

BBlitzen is 7.1 ounces = 202.8 grams - up 14.2 grams

PPrancer is 7.25 ounces = 206  grams - up 14.2 grams

CCupid is 6.1 ounces = 174 grams - up 14.2 grams

October 14th - five days old- Rudolph and Prancer have shed their cords. Really nice weigh gains again. Keva has not given us any dilutes so I am going to guess colors based on this fact. It is possible that a kitten labeled as chocolate could be a blue or lilac. The two seals are for sure seals. The seal color is the first to come in as a dark shading.

Rudolph (male) seal point. You can see the color coming into his nose and ears.

Vixen objecting ..."Put me back!"(male) chocolate point

Blitzen (female) seal point. You can see the darker color coming into in her nose and ears.

Prancer (female) chocolate point

Cupid (male) chocolate point

Afternoon weigh in......

RRudolph is 6.38 ounces = 181.5 grams - up 17.8 grams

VVixen is 6 ounces = 170.8 grams - up 28.4 grams

BBlitzen is 6.6 ounces = 188.6 grams - up 21.4 grams

PPrancer is 6.75 ounces = 192  grams - up 24.9 grams

CCupid is 5.6 ounces = 160 grams - up 14.2 grams

October 13th - four days old  They are all doing very well.  Cupid did indeed make up for his day off, lol.  Keva went in to the Vet to have her eye rechecked. It has healed nicely. While there we also had Dr. Schaefer listen to the kittens hearts and confirm if I have them sexed correctly. All the kittens sound good so they are off to a wonderful start. She agreed with me that we have three boys and two girls in this litter.

Afternoon weigh in......

RRudolph is 5.75 ounces = 163.7 grams - up 17.8 grams

VVixen is 5 ounces = 142 grams - up 7.1 grams

BBlitzen is 5.9 ounces = 167 grams - up 10.7 grams

PPrancer is 5.9 ounces = 167  grams - up 10.7 grams

CCupid is 5.1 ounces = 146 grams - up 21.4 grams

October 12th - three days old -Everyone is gaining nicely. Looks like Cupid took the day off. Its the over all total numbers not the day to day totals that are important. He will most likely make up for it tomorrow. Keva has been happy with the new location of her nest. I've changed out the bed and it didn't phase her. Vixen and Blitzen have shed their cords.

Afternoon weigh in......

RRudolph is 5.1 ounces = 146 grams - up 17.8 grams

VVixen is 4.75 ounces = 135 grams - up 21 grams

BBlitzen is 5.5 ounces = 156.6 grams - up 17.8 grams

PPrancer is 5.5 ounces = 156.6  grams - up 17.8 grams

CCupid is 4.38 ounces = 125 grams - up 3.5 grams

October 11th - two days old -Keva's nesting box was in our master bedroom because we have a new girl in residence in my office. This morning I checked in on the kittens and went to take a shower. While I was in the shower Keva moved all the kittens under the bed where I could not reach them. No nest or bedding. We had to pull the bed apart to reach them and move them to a nicer location. We are trying Finola's cubby in my walk in closet. So far today has gone well.

Mum, stop washing my face I'm trying to sleep. (Prancer)

It seemed like a good place to hang my head

Afternoon weigh in......

RRudolph is 4.5 ounces = 128 grams - up 21.4 grams

VVixen is 4 ounces = 113.9 grams - up 17.8 grams

BBlitzen is 4.875 ounces = 138.8 grams - up 14.2 grams

PPrancer is 4.875 ounces = 138.8  grams - up 14.2 grams

CCupid is 4.25 ounces = 121 grams - up 17.8 grams

If you look at the edge of the kitten's ear next to Keva's elbow you can see some dark beginning to come in.

It started out so nice and orderly. The kitten (Vixen) who is horizontal was verticle on the end but moved before I could take a photo.

Rudolph ended up crawling all the way across to the left to nurse next to Vixen and on top of Blitzen.

October 10th - one day old - I was so surprised by the very nice weight gains that I waited a bit then went back and re-weighed Prancer just to make sure I hadn't made a dyslexic switch any of any numbers. They were true for Prancer so I am very happy with how good and strong these kitten are nursing. I think we may have two seals and three chocolates but it really is too early to tell. It will be fun to see if I am wrong or right, lol. Two of the kittens look like their fur has an orangeish tint, Rudolph and Blitzen. Some breeders refer to the warm undertone of  the seal point as having rufus tone. If a seal has very little of this tone thay are called cold seals. In these two kittens its very very subtle and can only be seen in a lower light. When I use the Verilux light (truer color spectrum) all the kitten's coat color looks alike.

Afternoon weigh in......

RRudolph is 3.75 ounces = 106.8 grams - up 17.8 grams

VVixen is 3.38 ounces = 96.1 grams - up 7.1 grams

BBlitzen is 4.375 ounces = 124.5 grams - up 14.2 grams

PPrancer is 4.375 ounces = 124.5  grams - up 21.3 grams

CCupid is 3.625 ounces = 103.2 grams - up 14.2 grams

October 9th - Keva delivered five new babies this afternoon. All placentas were accounted for.  She began around 12:30. Kitten one was born at 2:32 pm and came tail first. I helped her to break the sack and held the head up for her to lick and clear the face. Keva is not a very good birth mom when it comes to immediate care for the newly born so we help her out a bit. She wasn't into cleaning this kitten, so after the placenta presented, I pinched the cord to clear it of blood and then snipped the cord with a scissor. I use a mustache scissor because it has rounded ends to protect the kitten should it wiggle or kick. I rubbed it with a terry cloth. We turned on a small ceramic heater to help the kittens stay warm until Keva can get them cleaned and dry. Kitten Rudolph has a loud voice and used it to protest a lot. He latched on to a nipple early on and was not going to be knocked off no matter what happened, lol. I did the same thing with each kitten as it was born. I broke the bag tried to get Keva to clear its face. Protected it from being dragged by Keva as she moved until the placenta was expelled. Pinched the cord clear then snipped it. Then took the kitten and rubbed it with a terry cloth. Because Keva was not cleaning them I wet a terry cloth with very warm water and rubbed them to help clean them. The job I did was poor but it helped them to dry some until Keva was done delivering. Once she had finished she rested a bit then began cleaning them until they were fluffy. Green has a much smaller voice then red. Blue is a big powerful kitten and pushed its way around to latch on well and nurse too. All of the kittens have been latching on and nursing. They are all very fussy about finding the right nipple. Seems like everyone wants the same one.

The Stats at birth

#1 2:32 pm  redRudolph – 88.969 grams (3.125 ounces)

#2 2:43 pm  greenVixen – 88.969 grams (3.125 ounces)

#3 3:25 pm  blue  Blitzen – 110.321 grams (3.875 ounces)

#5 4:25 am white Cupid 88.969 grams (3.125 ounces)

Each kitten is marked with a non-toxic color so we can tell them apart and monitor their progress.

Individual diary names are only for the diary the kittens owners will choose forever names for their kittens.

Keva hiding from the contractions.

The first three kittens in stages of being half clean.

Based on their early color I think red is a seal and  green is a chocolate.

Green crawling up onto Keva's head was too cute to not do a close-up

One - red with a very long tail.

Two - green

Three - blue

Four - purple

Five - white

White wouldn't hold still facing the camera so here is a face photo too.

Green power nursing just a few hours after birth.

October 8th - We've had some excitable Mom's this week (hormones?). Keva had mistaken both Maeve and Finny as a strange danger cat and attacked them. Once all were calmed down she was fine with them. Even sleeping with and grooming them. Unfortunately during one episode she got her eye scratched by the defender. She went in to see the Vet when Finola's kitten's went in for their visit. She has a small nick on her eyeball so she is getting eye antibiotics to help it heal. They eye ointment is neonate safe and will not harm the kittens.

September 29th - Keva went in to have an xray to see how many kittens she has. It looks to be four. The lateral x-ray is to unclear to really see anyone clearly so I am only adding the one top view.

The curved rounded objects are skulls and the zipper like bones are their spines.

September 27th - Proving once again that an unmade bed is the best place to sleep.

You can see in this photo that Keva's tummy fur is wet. Mama Maeve has been grooming her tummy for her.

It looks like Grandma Maeve is hugging the kittens. I wonder if she feels them moving? We can feel them.

And Keva's head is hanging off the side of the bed, lol.

September 14th - Keva is rounding out. We are confident she is pregnant.

Keva is expecting kittens in October.
