Fenya's Kitten Diary Spring 2011
This reads from the bottom up. New entries are added at the top so its easy to follow as they grow.
The music used on this page is Let Them Be Little by Billy Dean
These kittens are the progeny of our sire Polo and dam Fenya
This is Fen's first litter. The colors of kittens she produces will help us determine what color genes she carries.
We have deposits holding all kittens in this litter.

April 2nd & 3rd - eleven weeks old - Today brings a close to Fenya's Kitten Diary. Yesterday we sent Robin home with her family and today we said good bye to Ibis. As we get emails and photos on how they are doing I will post updates to the Where Are They Now? page.  They were all so sweet and fun. We will miss them.

April 1st - Today everyone got their nails trimmed and Tanager's family is picking him up. We sent him home with his favorite fish and a few other necessary toys. He had a great time this morning playing with Nemo. He would bat him about then grab him in his mouth and run circles through the house with his tail half puffed, drop, bat, repeat...Ibis and Robin had fun fooling me as to who was who. I was convinced Ibis was in the basket and Robin was playing with toys....and I thought she is doing forward rolls just like Ibis...oh no that is Ibis and Robin was in the basket, lol. Ibis came in to help me work. She sat at my feet and meowed. When I reach out to her she has started pushing her head up to meet my hand while standing on her back legs.

We woke up to this ...its not a funny April fools joke, lol.

I found Nemo too and he's all mine!

Tanager, Can I have your fish?   "No, Meowmy, I'm not even going to look at you because he is MINE."

Running the circuit with Nemo.

Ibis got the mouse repeatedly. Always doing a forward roll when she pounced on it.

March 30th - I tried to get a photo of Fenya with Tanager's head trapped under her chest but she never got resolved to sit on him. They were wrestling all over the room, lol. When he's not attacking momma his favorite opponent is Robin. I think she just enjoys it more then Ibis. Ibis seems to be more royally composed then to be scrapping about like a hooligan. She prefers sparkle pom rugby, lol.

Momma teaching Tanager she is top cat.

Momma saying don't attack and bite me or I'll get you back!

Robin really likes watching the computer cursor. Here she is helping me edit photos of Keva's kittens. Ibis is trying to figure out what is so interesting.

March 27th - ten weeks old - The kittens are so sweet. This time with them makes all the hard times melt away. Each of them at times will call to me and come running to me.In the morning they circle around my feet meowing for me to pick them up for their good morning kiss and loving before they run off to play. They are ready to begin bonding with their new families. Fenya is a very good momma. When they have been out playing for some time she will go into my office and call to them to come use the litter box and get a drink or snack. She does it every day. It's pretty amazing. I've never had a queen do this before. I've always been the one to bring them back and reinforce their training. She is a great partner ...now if she can just mellow out the protectiveness she feels about the other cats, she would be awsome, lol. Here are some sunny room photos....enjoy!

March 25th - The kittens been having lots of fun. The act as if they don't know that they have had surgery. They  like to run up behind momma and jump on her head, lol. Momma rough houses and gets them back. She traps their head under her chest while they are on their back, and they use all four feet to kick her head....somehow this is fun for all, lol.

The girls napping with Momma

March 21st -23rd - On Monday the kittens went in for their surgeries. Their pre-surgery blood work was normal and all did very well under anesthesia. Their surgery was in the afternoon so they came home with their pupils blown wide and all hyped up. I tried to keep them as under control as possible. They did well as long as they each had a toy in their paws and mouth, lol. Ibis was little Ms. Hyde. The girls have small incisions with stitches in the muscle wall that will resorb as they heal.  Externally the skin is glued so they have no visible stitches. Tanager's tiny snip in back is glued  but he does have abdominal stitches where is umbilical hernia was repaired. They all were given an injection of pain medication that lasts for several days.

After a nice dinner they settling down in their beds. Ibis going in circles chasing her tail, lol. Robin bathing her legs while Tanager fell asleep.

Robin and Tanager reverted to suckling a bit again. Momma is being somewhat patient but often will kick them away with her back feet. I have noticed a new calm has come over her. She has accepted that have grown old enough to not need her. She still watches over them but not with the same intensity she had before. This has given me hope that we can reintegrate her into the cat family after her kittens leave her.

Robin's incision. The goop on the skin around the incision is dried skin glue. Robin has some swelling where her sutures are in the muscle wall.
Ibis's incision with the same dried glue on the skin around it. No swelling, which is surprising considering how she responded to coming down from the anesthesia, lol.
Tanagers incision from umbilical hernia repair. He has fluorescent pink stitches. There is swelling from the sutures in his muscle wall but it doesn't show in this photo.
This is a display window on my computer tower...this morning when I came in someone had been playing cards, lol I suspect Robin since I've seen her hanging around my desk in this area. I've told her no online gambling... shopping is much more fun when the mailman brings the toys!

Ibis on a return trip with her ball.

Tanager bringing his toys into the carrier. He claimed this as his castle and wouldn't let the girls come in. I think he is planning a trip.

Ibis resting on her blanket. Robin is trying to nuzzle into Momma but Momma isn't having any of it.

Robin gave up and slept on Momma

Tanager likes to position himself so he can implore me with his eye to stroke his head and rub his ears, lol

March 20th - nine weeks old - This weekend we had a lovely visit from Robin's family. She has a deposit holding her now. The kitten's all behaved perfectly. We had her new Meowmy come in first to meet them. They all approved, came to her, and crawled on her.  Then we had the rest of the family join us. Robin will have twin boys to play with. They were the most darling and well behaved little boys. We could tell Robin is going to a good loving home. She will have lots of fun growing up with her boys.

Tanager has found a favorite toy in the toy basket. It's a fabric Nemo clown fish I found in a box of cereal. It's been in the toy basket through several litters and no one really paid it much attention until now. The way Tanager plays with it you would think it was filled with catnip, lol. He holds it between his paws and stands on his back legs, bites it, then dives forward into a summersault. He then proceeds to kick at it with his back feet, lol. He does this over and over hopping around with it. When Robin ventured a little too close he started growling with it in his mouth, lol. He has claimed it as his toy. He has been playing with it for several days now and gets very excited when he plays.

Ibis really likes to play with sparkle puff balls. She bats them around and carries them in her mouth. This morning she carried one to the end of the hallway dropped it and batted it all the way down the hall into the dining room. She picked it up trotted it back to the end of the hallway and batted it back out. She did this over and over again. I think she can be taught to fetch. She really enjoys it. When she was on my lap getting ready to nap she started to mouth my hand (not hard). I drew in my breath sharply and made a little noise and she froze, looked at me with big round eyes, and then licked that spot on my hand, lol. She was very gentle. I think she knows now not to bite.

We have a new feather toy and the kittens think it is the best one yet. They all love to play with it and even Momma Fenya will join in play. Its shown in today's photos. Fenya is also in her second heat since this litter was born. She is calling for boys. At first the kittens were not sure what to think but they quickly learned to ignore her, lol. When it was nap time this afternoon I called the kittens to come to my office. Robin sat and looked at me like she wasn't sure what she should do but with a little encouragement she came right to me.  I picked her up and carried her while Ibis followed us. I had to call to Tanager one more time and he came careening around the corner and into the office too. He wasn't quite done playing. While the girls were walking on my keyboard trying to settle down he was rough housing with a tweeting bird toy, lol. Ibis gave in to her nap first. My rubbing her ear did the trick. Sitting here with the sun behind her I noticed she has a couple really, really long eyebrow whiskers, lol. Robin gave in second when she went to suckle a little with momma. When Tanager heard her he gave up playing and pushed Robin away so he could have momma to himself. He is a big momma's boy still.

I tried to get them to play and pose in front of the window for better photo lighting, lol, not much posing happened.

March 17th - Happy St. Patrick's Day! - For St. Patrick's day all the kittens have decided to explore every possible surface with their teeth. If they can fit it in their mouth its getting spindled. We are working hard on learning what NoBite means, lol.

Don't watch me.

March 15th - This morning we went to the Vet for vaccinations and exams. Momma Fen got to go with because she needed her FVRCP vaccination too. The kittens traveled quietly and were all very good at the Animal Hospital. Ibis went first and she was not sure about this new adventure. She was very good and didn't cry when she got her shot. She puffed up her tail in protest of the exam but she didn't fight or try to leave. Maybe she was just trying to look like a bad cat not to be messed with. Robin went second and did equally well. She only puffed half her tail but she put her ridge up. She looked like a Siamese Ridgeback, lol. She did not cry for her shot either. Tanager went last and he was fine with everything....no puffing and no complaints. His belly button is doing fine and will be fixed when he has his alter surgery next week. All the kittens hearts sounded good. They passed their exams with a clean bill of health.

Robin weighed: 2 lbs 8.5 ounces

Tanager weighed: weighed: 2 lbs 13 ounces

Ibis weighed: weighed: 2 lbs 9.5 ounces

Tanager seems to be the least effected by his vaccination, although he did use it to his advantage and suckled and snuggled with Momma when they got home. Ibis has been sleeping all day. Her ears are warm so her body is working the vaccine. Robin has been splitting her time between sleeping and seeking attention.

March 13th - eight weeks old -14th - I'm sorry it took me so long to update the diary. We have been having lots of fun playing and learning. Robin is always first to call to me and crawl into my lap. She is quickly followed by Tanager, and Ibis has come around to climb aboard now too. They all look so much alike that I was fooled by Ibis several times yesterday and today before I realized she had joined in. I thought it was Robin climbing on my lap and loving up to me, when I picked her up to kiss her face, I discovered it was Ibis, lol. Litter box use has been excellent. We discovered our own tails are good to chase. A toy that is always with us, lol. Today we had a visit with Tanager's family. He now has a deposit holding him. Momma Fenya was very good and was able to stay out with us. She was a little worried at times but she didn't turn into cuckoo momma. Tanager was a star. He was not shy at all and he didn't mind when little Miss M would pick him up and hug him over, and over, again, and again. He did better then I would expect of a baby who had never met a young child. He is going to be very loved on.

March 9th -Tuesday morning when I came to say good morning to the kittens they all came running calling to me. I sat down and Robin and Tanager crawled into my lap and Ibis went running out into the hall. Ten seconds later Tanager ran after her and up the stairs. Robin stayed in my lap so I carried her to the living room. Her siblings joined her when they heard us calling to them. At night when I gathered them up for the night I took Tanager and Ibis first. When I came back to the living room for Robin she was sitting in the nest behind the couch calling to her brother and sister. She still calls out when she is alone. The skies have been over cast so eye colors in these photos are not great.

It's not all work and worry for momma she plays too. Ibis chased her out of the room this morning, lol.

March 6th - seven weeks old - The kittens are enjoying their new expanded play space. They are still sensitive to some household  noise and unexpected movement. We trimmed nails this morning. All the kitten's were good for me. Robin squirmed a bit but gave in. Ibis's family came to visit. She did a good job showing off. She has a deposit holding her. Momma Fenya was not so happy to see strangers. She has done well with other visitors. I think maybe we caught her by surprise as she was waking up from her nap. All three kittens enjoyed playing.

March 5th - Playing in the living room and getting our courage up. We're getting more used to pots and pans and silverware clanking in the kitchen. Last night Tanager decided he wants to be in my lap. He's not quite big enough to jump up so climbed my leg like a tree. We need to trim nails tomorrow, lol. He really enjoyed having his head and cheeks stroked as he fell asleep in my lap.

March 2nd - The kittens have all reached 2 lbs for today's weigh-in. We will no longer weigh them. They are getting more comfortable with being out in the house for play time. Robin has started playing with Da Bird. Somebody found great grandma Maeve's spider and brought it into the hall. I have no idea how it got into the hall but Tanager made quick work of dispatching the dangerous creature. Tonight they were playing pinball and they were the balls. They had three safe zones, the base of the cat condo, behind the chair, and behind the ottoman. They would speed from one safe zone to the other with non stop energy. It looked kinetic, two would be on base and when the third one arrived one of the others would fly off. It really looked the the balls in a pinball machine, lol. They did this non stop the entire time they were playing. I brought them back to the kitten room for the night. Ibis crawled up into the tube and settled down to sleep. I kneeled down to kiss and settle down Tanager in the nest and Robin crawled up on my calves and fell asleep, lol.

bi-weekly weigh in......

Robin is 2 lb. .25 ounces = 918 grams - up  85  grams

Ibis and Tanager check out a new toy.

March 1st - Yesterday and today we went exploring. Last night they were so funny. They didn't hesitate at all to leave the kitten room. They were comfortable exploring so I got out Da Bird. This was their first encounter with a moving toy that is not in my hand. They were drawn to play with it yet were not sure if it was safe or not. Ibis was the first to go for it. She would hop forward and smack it with her paw then immediately hop back. She never took her eye off it. I think she really believed it would get her back. She spent the whole time doing this. Tanager wasn't so sure he wanted to touch this bird. When I put it near him he hissed and growled at it, lol, but he got over his discomfort pretty quickly and was soon pouncing on it. He loved running after it. I kept his activity low so as not to cause his button any stress. When they first came into the hall my husband walked through and spooked Robin a little. She ran back into the kitten room and kept calling to us from the cat tree, lol. I kept telling her to come play and after some time she came out and tried to go right up the stairs. She is little and failed on her first three attempts. She looked about a bit then ran at high speed back into the kitten room. She would scoot out and explore then run back all night. I think she enjoyed running at top speed. She did take time to go up the stairs once she figured out how to heft herself up. After exploring they were ready for bed. I was sitting at my desk and Robin came and was hopping at my legs. She isn't big enough yet to get into my lap. I picked her up and she settled to sleep.

Robin asleep

This morning when I opened the run the kittens came pouring out onto the hall. They were very happy to say good morning and play. Robin is still doing the back and forth run but exploring further and longer then last night. She went all the way into the living room and all the way upstairs. She has become an expert stair climber. Ibis now attacks the bird and has no concern it will get her.

February 27th six weeks old - Tanager has reached 2 pounds. The girls are not far behind. One or two more weigh ins and we will stop checking their weight. They are doing excellent with litter training. This week we will begin to explore outside my office. Short excursions so they can become comfortable with a larger home environment. Since having her kittens Fen has become cat aggressive with a focus on Keva. She has at times gone after Maeve and Emma so we have been keeping them separated. When the kittens explore the other girls will be kept in our master suite. Momma Fenya is also back in heat and making lots of noise about it. The kittens look at her like she is cuckoo, lol. Individually the kittens faces are hard to tell apart. If they are together its obvious who is who but in photos alone they look very similar. I think I have everyone identified correctly in the following photos.

February 25th - The kittens are losing their big headed toddler look. Their faces are becoming balanced and really pretty...now if I can just figure out the colors. Could they all be the same color and would that be seal? They are much more confident in their abilities and spend much of their awake time climbing around on the cat tree and playing ball. Tanager is becoming very social due to us wanting to push in his jelly belly button whenever we see him. We will make sure we are giving equal time to the girls. Right now our outgoing Ibis is showing a bit of reserve. She may be avoiding me on purpose, lol. She has been trying to get into areas she knows she shouldn't. She will be getting some extra handling this coming week as I divert her attention. Ibis also discovered her tail and spins around, while sitting on her hip, trying to grab it. I've seen Robin trying to catch her tail before being distracted by a nearby toy. I'll try to get some better photos this weekend after the storm have passed. Hopefully the sun will visit and give me better eye lighting.

February 18th - All three kittens have demonstrated their use of the litter box multiple times. They are very smart kittens. They are also getting harder for me to tell apart in photos, lol. In person I don't have a problem because, most times, lol,  I can see the subtle color differences but photos wash that out, or if they sit in the shadows I can't tell. Two of the kittens were sitting in the tube condo  I looked at at their faces and I did not know who I was looking at. I thought it was Ibis and Tanager but then Ibis ran up to my leg and I knew I made a mistake. That pretty little face was Robin's.

I added a nest under my desk for them and no one has slept in it yet.

February 14th - Happy Valentines Day - Tanager went by himself and yelled all the way to the animal hospital. He had a nice hot water bottle to keep him snug and warm. Magi also went in her own carrier because she was getting her teeth cleaned today. The ride home was quieter. He was getting the hang of going for a ride, lol. Dr. Schaefer said that since we have never seen this in our kittens before this is probably a case of  a new momma being to rough with his umbilical cord. She estimated the opening is about 3 millimeters and the bulge is fat. We are going to wait and see if we can get him to his alter surgery day and do this easy repair at the same time. We need to check it daily and push the fat back in any time we hold him. If it suddenly gets any bigger he will need to have surgery sooner. We want to make sure his intestine never protrudes as this can cause a serious complication. Fingers crossed and knocking on wood that all goes according to plan and we avoid two separate surgery dates. Nobody is using the litter box yet but Robin is still trying. She digs, postures, and grumbles about going but she's not quite mature enough yet. She is eager to be a big kitty, lol.

Nappin in a sunbeam

February 13th - four weeks old - Ibis is a natural model when it comes to photos. I had no trouble getting nice birthday photos of her. Tanager took a little work and I didn't do well for Robin. She just wasn't into posing nicely for me. There was just too much for her to do today, lol. Tanager will be going to see the Vet tomorrow morning. We noticed today that he has a tummy bulge. I think it is probably an umbilical hernia. We removed the box today and put the family nest in the corner. The kittens are enjoying exercising.

bi-weekly weigh in......

Robin is 1 lb. 2.75 ounces = 534 grams - up  57  grams

February 12th - Tanager was like a completely different kitten today. I guess he has done enough covert reconnaissance to determine his environment is safe, lol. I mentioned before about them all having different coats. I've taken a close up photo of Tanager's baby fur to show you what I am seeing. We have seen this coat one time before in one of our kittens and the owners let us know that once the baby coat was shed he grew in a beautiful soft adult coat with no speckles. Robin has the darkest shaded coat. It doesn't show in photos but at times we can see ghost baring on her body. We have also has dark bodied kittens turn into beautiful fawn colored coats as adults. As you can see in the group photo below these colors are very slight differences. I am looking at them with an experienced breeders eye. Families who visit often can't tell the difference. Kitten coats don't always reflect what the adult coat will be. This is one of the reasons show breeders keep Siamese kittens longer then 10 to 12 weeks. They want to see the adult coat.

I fished it out and laid it on the rug. He went over and gobbled it up so I added a few kibbles and he ate those too.

February 11th - Tanager is very vocal when he is out and about checking things out. It is driving momma crazy. She keeps thinking he is in distress and wants to scruff him home. Maybe he heard about making lots of noise to avoid bears, lol. I am working with momma, holding her back so she learns he is just expressing his excitement.

Ibis,  "I'm first  up here but I'm not sure it's a good thing?"

Tanager, "You lookin' at me?"

Tanager and Robin. "Did you hear him say I'm rabbit eared? I'm gonna show him rabbit eared!"

Robin biting Tanager's ear. lol

"I didn't say it, sigh, I'm tired", Tanager

February 10th -We introduced more toys, the kitten bowls and litter boxes.  Since everyone is over a pound and starting to nibble at kibble we will be weighing them only twice a week until they reach 2 pounds. Robin's first foray into the training litter box showed she knew just what it was for. She squatted and pushed and yelled. All kittens yell when they are first learning to use their muscles. Nothing came out but she tried. Momma needs to learn it's okay for the kittens to yell.

Morning weigh in......

Robin is 1 lb. .75 ounces = 477 grams - up  21.4  grams

Tanager is 1 lb. 3.25 ounces = 548 grams - up 46 grams

Ibis is 1 lb. 1.75 ounces = 491 grams - up 21.4 grams

Ibis - "I gots a sparkle ball"

Tanager, "What's that Ibis?" -  Ibis, "It's my ball grrrr"

Robin playing with a ball. Upper right is Tanager observing from a "safe" place.

All three had their first little drink. Tanager from the kitten bowl.  Ibis and Robin from the big bowl.

Ibis and Tanager. Ibis is teething on the bowl, lol.

Robin tasted the food but the slight puff in her tail and ridge says "I'm not quite sure about this."

February 9th -We were so enthusiastic about exploring and playing that we forgot to get weighed. Tonight after dinner when I came in all three kittens came running forward...even Tanager. It was so cute. It's time to put up the run and bring in the baby bowls. We limit the area as they start to eat baby cat kibble and learn to use the litter box.

Ibis is 1 lb. .5 ounces = 470 grams - up 3.6 grams

February 7th - Ibis is Miss 'Out & About' whenever she is awake. When I entered her weight this morning I double checked my excel formulas and went and  re-weighed everyone. It was hard for me to believe her weight gain with how active she has been. I guess its muscle weight, lol because they are all correct. Fen's toe is getting better. She allows me to press it and expose the end of the toe. It still looks red but at least it does not hurt when I press it. She looks awful now with fever speckles coming into her mask and points. Shes lost hair on her ears. She looks bad but feels better, lol. With time the color and fur will return back to normal.

Morning weigh in......

Robin is 15.25 ounces = 434 grams - up  17.8  grams

Tanager is 1 lb. 1 .25 ounces = 491 grams - up 21.4 grams

February 6th three weeks old - I've been introducing the kittens to a toy mouse. Robin is very quick to be alert and track movement. She looks like she will be the scamp of the litter. Fast and petite like her great grandma Maeve. Tanager is not sure of things yet. He is being cautious. I am working with him to increase his confidence and give him positive experience. He is going to be a big boy. His head is big. His feet are big. He's just big, lol. Ibis continues to be very comfortable and interested in everything new. While Tanager and Robin were fast asleep, Ibis ventured out of the box this morning. With momma watching over her she didn't get to explore very far. I held a kitten kibble for her to lick. She thought it was great, much better then licking the towel.

Morning weigh in......

Robin is 14.63 ounces = 416.4 grams - up  10.7  grams

Tanager is 1 lb. .5 ounces = 469.7 grams - up 14.2 grams

Tanager is 1 lb. 0 ounces = 455.5 grams - up  21.4 grams

Ibis is 14.5 ounces = 412.8 grams - up 14.2 grams

February 4th - The kittens teeth are working their way in. You can see the lumps in the open mouth photos. I can feel little sharp tips on a few of the teeth. Ibis is Miss social she likes to come out on my lap when I sit in front of the box.  All the kittens are studying me and learning how they feel about people and being stroked. Last night Ibis was sitting at the front of the nest while I was taking to them. She was very intent on what I was saying then all of a sudden KLONK her head fell to her paw...asleep. LOL She must have been fighting to stay awake and sleep won. Robin's photos were taken in lower light then Tanager and Ibis's. This is why we see the reflected red of her pupils.

Morning weigh in......

Robin is 13.7 ounces = 388 grams - up  17.8  grams

Tanager is 15.25 ounces = 434 grams - up  14.2 grams

February 2nd - Happy Ground Hog Day....early spring? Our groundhogs are buried under so much snow I don't think they could even emerge to see a shadow, lol. Momma is not happy about taking her medicine or soaking her paw but we are getting it done. Her paw does not smell anymore. Babies are doing well. No one has ventured out yet.

Morning weigh in......

Robin is 12.6 ounces = 359.4 grams - up  10.7  grams

Tanager is 14.25 ounces = 405.7 grams - up  21.4 grams

Ibis is 13.1 ounces = 373.7 grams - up 21.4 grams

February 1st - We were up early today and on the road in today's snow storm. The usual half hour trip took and hour both ways. I was happy we were able to get in early as the worst of the storm was predicted for the afternoon. About 10 inches more snow had accumulated by the time we got home. We have to hire a front end loader to clear the mounds from the sides of our driveway. The plow man says he can't plow anymore snow onto it. I think this is the most snow I have ever seen at one time. We just have not had very much melt between each storm. The mounds of snow are six feet tall and we still have a another storm coming tomorrow morning.

The Fen contingent behaved very well at the animal hospital. The babies didn't yell and upset momma and momma was sooo well behaved even with the pain she must have felt. She had lost her entire nail and the toe was full of pus. Dr. Schaefer cleaned it and we soaked the paw in an antibacterial solution. We came home with an antibiotic that is baby safe, in case any goes into her milk. She will take it twice a day. We will also be giving her paw an Epsom salt soak twice a day. The salt water soak is for the safety of the kittens instead of a antibacterial soak. We expect the infection to be gone in 72 hours and healing to begin. She still does not limp or favor that paw in any way. If it weren't for the infection I would not have known she was injured.

Thinking back I believe I know when it happened. She was racing about the house with Keva earlier in the week. They took the turn through the butler's pantry at top speed. I found a spot of blood there on the base board. I checked both girls over and found no blood and they both seemed fine at the time. I think she must have taken the turn too fast and smacked her front paw into the wall and shattered her nail. I am really surprised she never limped and that there wasn't more blood. Maybe the adrenalin from the chase over road all other feeling.

It seems there is always something....another $100.00 spent cha-ching, lol.

I'm now switching the nest out twice a day....trying to get that smell out of my nose....and keeping the babies environment extra clean.

Momma still uses her sore right paw to hug

Morning weigh in......

Robin is 12.25 ounces = 349 grams - up  21  grams

Tanager is 13.5 ounces = 385 grams - up  14 grams

January 31st - The kittens are bright and alert when awake. I can see the little wheels turning in Robin's brain. She is thinking about going for a walk about. She is just not quite sure yet. They are enjoying being held more. The instinctual panic is subsiding in favor of exploration. They are starting to bite and wrestle a little bit...as much as one can when one can't really walk yet, lol.

Tonight while cradling Fenya in my arms, on her back, I leaned my head down to kiss her front paws and was hit with a terrible smell. I knew I knew that smell but could not place it right away. I tried to think of what she could have stepped in? I set her down and told her to clean herself, lol. I checked around the house and in the nest. I could not find a source. I looked at the bottom of her paw to see if I could wash it away but there was nothing there. The next morning the smell was still there. I changed out the kitten nest for a freshly laundered one. Washed up one of the kittens bottoms that was a little messy. Then thought I better help her wash that paw if she didn't want to lick that awful smell off. As I placed her paw under the faucet my memory kicked in and I knew what it was. It was the smell of an infection. Fenya has not been limping or showing any signs of distress with her paw at all. She has been quite normal for a doting momma. I tried to look at each of her toes and she would not let me see the middle one. I called to my Vets office and made an appointment for Fen to be seen in the morning.

Morning weigh in......

Robin is11.5 ounces = 327 grams - up  7.1  grams

Tanager is 13 ounces = 370 grams - up  17.8 grams

January 30th - two weeks oldToday is the kittens two week birthday. They continue to thrive. Now when I sit at the box and talk they tip their heads up to look at me. In today's photos the nose leather colors look seal, blue and chocolate? For their birthday they all got pedicures on all paws.

January 28th -  Right now Robin has the darkest nose. I'm pretty confident she is going to be a seal point. Tanager now has the lightest nose. I'm still not sure if he will be blue, chocolate or if his color is a little slower coming in? I tried to get a face photo but he didn't want to pose, lol. Ibis' nose is in between  the colors of Robin and Tanager...It looks lighter in the photo then when I look at it directly.

January 26th - This morning the kittens were grooming themselves. Licking their arms and trying to lick their tummies. We are starting to see the definition of their pupils. They look wall eyed because they have not learned to focus yet.

Morning weigh in......

Robin is 8.125 ounces = 231.5 grams - up  17.8  grams

Tanager is 8.75 ounces = 228 grams - up  21.4 grams

Ibis is 8 ounces = 206.4 grams - up 17.8 grams

January 23rd - one week old - All of the kittens are doing wonderfully. In their first week they have all met the goal of doubling their weight. Ibis even went over. Robin and Tanager were exact, lol. You can see the slight differences in their kitten coats in the weight basket photos. Kittens lose their baby coats and get in totally different adult coats by 6 months of age. Usually if a baby coat has more under coat the adult coat will also have more of the soft undercoat....like Ibis' coat. All three kittens have their eyes completely open. They eyes are still developing so they look all black. Tanager has a big voice and likes to express himself. During his one week photo session he was yelling the whole time, lol. This may change once his eyes can focus and he can see what is happening. Poor Momma Fenya is a good protective momma and always wants me to give them right back to her immediately when they call out to her. If I don't she tries to grab them and take them back herself, lol.

Robin's eyes are peeping open the most today.

Tanager was just too cute sleeping not to use this photo. He was sucking his thumb, lol. His eye's are a little less open the Robin's.

Ibis' eyes are just barely peeping open.

January 19th - three days old - We are eating and sleeping and getting pudgy tummies. Everyone's nose leather is now coloring, no lilac points.

Morning weigh in......

Robin is 5.25 ounces = 149.5 grams - up  14.2  grams

I have to eat my words about Ibis today. Her nose leather is looking darker.

January 18th - two days oldFenya, being a first time momma, is adjusting to her new roll. When she is not busy with the babies she is very vocal telling us how much she misses us when she is in her nesting box. She needs attention and petting. We moved  the family into my office last evening. I think this will help her to get more rest and me too, lol. She is settling in.

All the kittens are doing very well. Tanager made up for yesterdays loss by gaining a full ounce.

When momma is out of the box they huddle together for comfort and warmth.

Momma dove into the box and grabbed one to hug. He's trying to crawl forward to get to a nipple, lol.

Morning weigh in......

Robin is 4.75 ounces = 135.2 grams - up  17.8  grams

Tanager is 4.625 ounces = 131.7 grams - up  28.5 grams

Ibis is 4.125 ounces = 117.4 grams - up 10.7 grams

Robin

You can see a little bit of color in her nose leather

Tanager

Tanager's eye corners are starting to peep open. His ear edge is showing the darker color is developing

Ibis

Ibis is very calm when being held. If she speaks its with a soft voice.

She gives me the impression that she is lighter in coat color, maybe a chocolate or lilac? Time will tell.

January 17th - one day oldOut of the starting gate Fenya is not a natural mother, lol. She is getting some tutoring. Fen has always been a big licker. She gives me puppy kisses whenever I ask for them. When she was going into labor she was obsessed with licking me...anywhere she could. When my daughter was laying on the bed with her she licked her nose red. I found the best place to offer was the palm of my hands. They are tough enough to stand the dermabrasion of a kitty's tongue. I was a little worried she would lick the kittens fur off, lol. Well this morning the family nest was dirty. She didn't know to lick their bottoms. They are working hard at nursing. Tanager is the most vocal and active in this pursuit. After weighing them I can see why he is yelling. He's not getting his share. I watched him and he is actively suckling as much as he can. His timing musty be off with Robin and Ibis drinking the supply before he gets there. It's not unusual for babies to lose a little weight the first day or so until momma's milk comes in to match the demand. I'll keep an eye on him to make sure he isn't getting shut out.

Morning weigh in......

Robin is 4.125 ounces = 117.4 grams - up  10.7  grams

Tanager is 3.625 ounces = 427 grams - down  10.7 grams

Ibis is 3.75 ounces = 106.8 grams - up 10.7 grams

Momma was not happy with me taking the kittens for photos so I had to be quick. I'm posting two of Tanager because in the first one he is pushing his head forward so he looks slimmer then he should then the second one he is pulling back, lol. I tried two photo sessions and decided this was what we get for now. I don't want to make my new momma think she has to hide them from the paparazzi.

January 16th - Birth Day - Last night Fenya became very restless. Around 9:00 pm we saw the first signs that her cervix was thinning and opening. We spent a restless night. Her contractions began around 9:00 am this morning. Her delivery was normal and she had no problems. With the first kitten she did do a bit of yelling during her contractions. Once that kitten was delivered she understood and was fine. One and Two delivered head first as expected, placentas followed.

Kitten Three presented breach. It delivered half way then Fenya paused and waited for the next set of contractions. It was a short wait and she delivered kitten and placenta all at once. The kitten showed no movement. I broke the bag from its face and encouraged Fen to lick it to stimulate breathing. No response from the kitten. I took the kitten cut its cord and suctioned quite a bit of fluid from its mouth. I rubbed it with a terry cloth in front of the heater trying to stimulate it. I swung it to remove any fluid that might be in its throat, massaged its chest, and tried little puffs (kitten CPR). This kitten never responded

Kitten Four delivered breach also. Fen had a set of strong contractions and the kitten delivered in one push followed by its placenta.

It is important for a breeder to make sure the kittens placentas are all expelled. If a queen chews a cord and does not expel a placenta this can become a life threatening situation for the entire litter as was as the mom due to the inevitable infection that will follow.

All three kittens began immediately rooting for nipples smacking their little lips and tongues. Tanager was yelling the loudest and power walking about the nest in search of his.

For the diary  names will be used representing the color each kitten is marked with for identification.  New owners choose real names.

Siamese kittens are born all white. We mark kittens with a non-toxic color so we can tell them apart and monitor their progress.

January 10th - We are preparing for Fenya's litter to be born. Last week when I brought the birthing box out Keva decided it was hers. She is not pregnant, lol. She even went to far as to ask me to come and sit in front of it with her and love on her. We decided it might be for the best to make a second box for Fenya. This weekend we bought all new foam board and lined a box with it. Added fresh towels and draped the top and front with towels. Both boxes are sitting side by side. Last night when we went to bed Keva was sitting in front of the new box. When I peeked in Grandma Maeve was inside, next door Fenya had made herself a snug nest in the bedding. We can now see the kittens moving about when she lays on her side resting.  Here she is as of last night.

December 30th - Fen went to see the Vet and have her kitten count x-ray today. It looks like she does have four kittens. They are nicely lined up head first ready for delivery.

"What do you mean I have a bulge? I'm not the one eating the Christmas cookies."

I've outlined the head areas of each kitten. It may be easier for you to see the spine and ribs.

Kitten three's head is a guess. It looks like its body is twisted with its head tucked under.

Lateral view is just a jumble of bones. They are all too lined up on top of each other to see much of anything, lol.

Fen is sleeping a lot but she still like to play too.

December 28th - I can feel kittens moving on both sides. From the size of her baby bulge I am going to guess she has 4 kittens.

November 7th - We are breeding Fen to Polo. We hope for kittens in mid January.
