1936 Notes from Siamese Breeders

____________________________________________________________

April 1936

Dr. J.C. Thompson writes us that we only got part of his Seal Point Siamese Novice name in the California Show Report. The name is Tai Noo Mau and she is the same cat which took first in the open as well as first and winners as a novice.

Mrs. C. C. Strange, Valhalla Cattery, El Paso, Tex., has received a letter from Mr. Harding saying how very pleased he is with the kitten he purchased recently from Mrs. Strange, says it is developing into a wonderful cat and he found Mrs. Strange extremely nice to deal with.

Mrs. A. G. Johnson of the Crickmere Cattery, Cleveland, Ohio writes that kittens have been coming fast and going fast recently. A Siamese male kitten having been sold to Dr. Branch of Cleveland Heights, Ohio

Mrs. Ellwood Wilson of Knowlton, Quebec, has chosen the name of "Hillwood" for her cattery, which she has registered with the International Cat Council in Toronto, Canada. Mrs. Wilson is a breeder of Siamese and has made a number of nice sales recently. Two of her lovely Siamese kittens by Poona Purachatr, ex Ming King, have been purchased by Mr. Mitchell of Montreal, a Siamese male kitten having been sold to Dr. Branch of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and all of the kittens boast very blue eyes and straight tails. Mrs. Wilson says these kittens are particularly sturdy. She believes on account of having been acclimated to the severe winter climate of Quebec.

May 1936

Mrs. Virginia Wood, Rosewood Cattery, Monrovia, Calif., who has heretofore specialized exclusively in silvers, recently purchased a fine blue point Siamese from the Siagon Cattery, which presented her mistress with four kittens on St. Patrick's day. Mrs. Wood also reports several nice sales, one very good Rosewood female going to Mrs. Eva L. Davust of Los Angeles, Calif.

We are very sorry to learn that Mrs. Louise Nadge now in Clearwater, Fla., met with a serious automobile accident on her way to the Jacksonville Cat show last December and nearly lost the sight of her right eye. She was in a South Carolina hospital for three months. After leaving the hospital she was entertained at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Graham of the El-Jay-Gee Cattery at Tarpon Springs, Fla. Mrs. Nadge cannot say enough about the kindness of these friends during her convalescence, nor about their beautifully equipped Cattery and the superb specimens of Siamese she saw there. Mrs. Nadge's own prize-winning silvers were left in the care of Mrs. Graham during her illness and it was a source of great comfort to know they were in such good hands.

Mrs. C. C. Strange, Valhalla Cattery, says she has just made another sale to Mrs. C. C. Adams of Longview, Tex. This time it is a lovely little Siamese female, which Mrs. Adams purchased as a mate for a fine male she has of the Rosebank strain. Mrs. Adams writes she is most delighted with the young lady and Mrs. Strange writes that Mrs. Adams is a lovely person to deal with.

June 1936

Mrs. Sonia Fitz-Gerald of Miami, Fla., reports the sale of a lovely female Siamese to Mrs. Ruth Brown of Miami. In spite of having her hands quite full, caring for her mother who broke her ankle in a fall, Mrs. Fitz-Gerald is still managing to do a rushing business and has been booking orders for future kittens for the past three months.

Miss Jane Roberts, Coeur-de-Lion Cattery, Hobart, Ind., writes how greatly she and the cat family are enjoying the flowers and all the beauties of nature, with which they are surrounded in the new location.

Mrs. Lucille Ashcraft Purnell, Rosebank Cattery, Salisbury, Md., says the Siamese number was a "wow." She also reports she has sold the following cats: A ten months old Siamese male to Capt. Taylor of Westclock, Va.; a Siamese queen to a Miss Moore of Dallas, Tex.. "And that's not all." says Mrs. Purnell. She has booked several more orders for kittens still too.

Mrs. C. C. Strange, Valhalla Cattery, El Paso, Tex., reports the sale of a young female Seal Point Siamese to Miss Winifred Porter, New Orleans, La. Miss Porter writes that she is delighted with her purchase, has just bred her and is now anticipating some more little beauties like her. Mrs. Strange also says she has just received a beautiful seal point kitten, five months old, purchased from Mr. M. Hainert of St. Paul, Minn., and likes her very much indeed. Mrs. Strange's imported "silli" has adopted the new arrival and thinks she is still a baby.

Mrs. George Loehr of Glenolden, Pa., a newcomer in the cat fancy, recently purchased a seal point Siamese female from Mrs. C. D. Bachman, Allentown, Pa. This cat is an especially good type daughter of Ch. Lanfine Sing Po of Ming Kwong owned by Mrs. Elizabeth Bearden. Mrs. Loehr is looking forward to a nice family of kittens from this queen in the near future. Mrs. Loehr found both Mrs. Bearden and Mrs. Bachman very nice and helpful to deal with. Mrs. Loehr has not yet decided upon a name for her cattery, but has made a good start with some splendid cats.

August 1936

Mrs. C. C. Strange, Valhalla Cattery, El Paso Tex., says she has an especially nice Siamese female as a visitor for breeding which belongs to Mrs. R. E. New, San Antonio, Tex. Mrs. New is the breeder of the fine male owned by Mrs. C. C Adams, Longview, Tex. for which Mrs. Adams recently purchased a mate from Mrs. Strange.

Mrs. W. C. Mooney of Forrest City, Ark. reports it is surprising to see how many persons are interested in cats and she plans to add Siamese to her cat family.

Dr. L. H. Fairchild, Carlsbad, Calif., says that the interesting articles in the Cat Gazette prompts him to write about his most fascinating Siamese pets. Both the doctor and his wife are especially interested in this breed. They have a lovely female Manchu Kagan Ssu, who won a blue ribbon as junior kitten at the age of three months and grows better and better each day. Dr. Fairchild says, "If you cat fanciers want some genuine entertainment just give your kittens a ping-pong ball and watch it go round and round"

Her invitation in the Cat Gazette has brought Mrs. Virginia R. Cobb, Newton Cattery, Newton, Mass., many visitors this summer. She recently enjoyed a visit from Mrs. Henrich and her daughter, who came all the way from San Francisco. They are friends of Dr. J. C. Thompson, the founder of the Burmese Society in California and Mrs. Cobb greatly enjoyed hearing all about the doctor and his cats.

Mrs. E. J. Steinle, Mountain Lakes, N. J., who recently added some fine Siamese to her cat family, now has four lovely Siamese kittens to offer, sired by Dbl. Ch. Chief Noda.

October 1936

Mrs. W. C. Moomey, Forrest City, Ark., has just purchased a seal point Siamese kitten from Mrs. Guy L. Webb, Muskogee, Okla. The kitten has been named Wejiee Wang and has already received fifty visitors in one week, some of whom drove a hundred miles to see her.

Mrs. L. H. Fairchild, Carlsbad, Calif., is de lighted with the purchase of a male seal-point Siamese kitten from Mr. Max Hainert. This promising kitten is sired by Dbl. Ch. Sy Mingo of New ton ex Ch. Ki Ku Ko.

Miss Dorothy Mayer, whose cat was the subject of the clever poem recently printed in the Cat Gazette, reports the sale of six Siamese kittens by Dbl. Ch. Sy Mingo of Newton ex Sisudah-Chands. There were seven in the litter, which were Sudie's first, when she was a year old, but Miss Mayer proposes to keep one of the females for breeding.

November 1936

Mrs. G. W. Frost, Angkor Cattery, Evansville, Ind. announces the arrival of three lovely Siamese kittens to Deti of Angkor, and says, "Perhaps my jinx is over now and I'll have a success story for the Cat Gazette some day. Both my queens lost their first litters, so I was pretty discouraged. I do enjoy the Gazette and expect to enjoy it more than ever, now that there are these three kittens."

We always hear about the cats and of late we are getting lots of interesting news about the well-known catteries over the country. The Newton cattery, owned by Mrs. Virginia R. Cobb, Newton, Mass., has been entirely done over, the whole inside was torn out and the walls and ceilings have been redecorated with aluminum paint.. New all-steel cages have been installed and Mrs. Cobb says, it is a great comfort to have everything so easy to keep clean and sanitary, well worth all the trouble and expense.

Mrs. A. G. Johnson, Crickmere Cattery, Cleveland, Ohio. has made some nice sales. A Siamese male went to Mr. Robert Marsh of Toledo, Ohio. Dr. Brash purchased a Siamese female. Mrs. Johnson says, "I hate to part with my pets, but feel sure they are all going to good homes."

My name is Peti-Sing, I live with Mrs. Lillian McWilliams in Sarasota, Fla. I am feeling quite proud of my children which I took to the show in Toronto. My oldest son Ch. Rama Sing won first in the champion Siamese class and my little girl Dara won best Siamese kitten and best Siamese in the show was won by another son of mine Ch. Chi-Chi. I didn't do so badly myself besides going first and winners it was decided that I had the best eye color of all the Siamese. My owner Mrs. McWilliams is planning to take me to several shows this winter. I used to always become ill when she took me North but she has discovered that the water does not agree with me, so she will take some of our good well water with her from home. She thinks of everything.

Dbl. Ch. Siam's Chief Noda-Purachatr, the first blue point Siamese in the United States to complete his championship both in the C. F. A. and the C. F. F. is feeling doubly proud since the arrival of his first Maine family. Princess Wangsy, the mama is in such a state of excitement over the babies that Miss Frith, owner of the Purachatr Cattery says she cannot even set foot in her own Cattery, much to her amusement. Miss Frith says there are five in the litter and though she is not permitted to see them, Mrs. Harnish, who manages the Purachatr Cattery for her says they are all very fine and that Princess is most devoted to them. Princess was formerly the mate of Siam's Sancho and took such a dislike to two kittens she had by him that she refused to feed them though she would take good care of two others of the very same litter. It seems that Princess is a very tempermental lady.

December 1936

Mr. C. Evans Sawyer, Jr., has sold a Siamese male kitten to Miss Geraldine Hacker of Portland, Me. They have a wire haired terrier in the Sawyer family, which is quite devoted to the Siamese kittens. They all snuggle into his fur for their daily nap, making an odd picture of perfect contentment.

Miss Jane Roberts, Coeur-de-Lion Cattery, Hobart, Ind., is very enthusiastic about  new kittens she has just purchased. One is a gem of a Siamese female, aged four months. She was purchased from Mrs. B. F. Poe of Kingston, Ont., and comes from the finest imported blood lines.

Mrs. George O. Lea of Stratford, Ont., writes that she has just received the Siamese kitten which she purchased through the Cat Gazette from Mrs. F. B. Poe of Kingston, Ont. Mrs. Lea says, "He is a perfect specimen and I wish to thank the Cat Gazette for the contact in this purchase."

Mrs. Ethel W. Garson, Glendale, Calif., recently purchased a fine registered Siamese female from Mrs. George Livingston, Mekong Cattery, Hollywood, Calif. Mrs. Garson is very pleased with her purchase and hopes to carry on with the Siamese in a big way.

EMPIRE SHOW BIG SUCCESS

The twenty-second annual show, sponsored by the Empire Cat Club, under C. F. A. Rules, was one of the big events to start the show season. The show was held in the beautiful roof garden of the Pennsylvania Hotel on November 12 and 13.

The Siamese Cat Society held a specialty show in conjunction with the Empire, which was judged by Mr. F. B. Eddy, widely known authority on this variety.
There were nearly 200 cats present and in spite of the early season most of the exhibits were in lovely coat and condition.

Best foreign short hair was a lovely seal point Siamese, E-Ging-Wah of Newton, owned by Mrs. V. R. Cobb.

Altogether the show was a splendid success.
