What Kian's Seein'- 2006
Kian's Blog
Hi, I'm the new kid, Kian. Meowmy says since I am new to a harness and going outside for walk's she thought it might be nice to share my experience.
So this is my page to tell you about my experiences with leash training.
(this reads from the bottom up )
I have to make up for that bad snake photo. This afternoon we were out on the back patio. We found this big bug. I didn't even see it. I thought Meowmy wanted me to smell the big Brugmansia flower. It did smell pretty. Look at this big Katydid!

And we found a frog too! He was funny old guy. He hopped onto the pool cover. I touched the cover but I didn't want to go on it. Meowmy said I could walk on it, don't worry its a Coverstar pool cover. It just felt too funny under my foot, it moved.

On my walk today I decided to jump up to the grass above the stone wall. We walked just a few steps when we heard a rustling of the grass. I stopped and listened and out of the grass slithered a big snake. He paused on the rock. Quick Meowmy snap his picture! Great we got him on film. Oh snap! A blade of grass was across the lens from when we crawled up the wall. Well he is there sort of....see that little bit of a curve by the black? That's him. Maybe we can get a better photo next time.

Did you know seashells make good face scratchers? I rubbed and rubbed this shell. I didn't want to stop....wait a minute what's that sound....is that the ocean I hear?

I'm still learning what this walking on a leash is all about. Today I went out under the oak tree in the shade. There was some rumbling noises but they didn't bother me. I played with a Japanese Beetle in the tall grass. Have you ever seen one? They are a bright metallic green. I lost him pretty quick and was looking for a new bug when I saw a snake...pounce...Meowmy saw his tail go into the grass. I think he was a small Garter Snake but he could have been an Eastern Ribbon Snake. I wonder what he was doing out in the grass with no rocks about to hide in? Up and down he wove his way in the grass. I kept trying to find him so I could play with him but he was too quick for me. Each time I saw him he was gone again! Meowmy had just found his head down in the grass next to my paw when I heard a strange noise. Kate said OH NO here comes the rain! I didn't feel any rain but the noise was coming closer and getting louder. Meowmy scooped me up in her arms and started running for the door. Kate was in the lead...plop...plop...ploplop....plopplopplopplop....The noise we heard was the giant rain drops hitting the tree leaves as the rain came toward us. Kate opened the door and I pushed against Meowmy with all my might....spring....I was out of her arms and in the door like a shot. Boy was that freaky. I ran straight into the kitchen and the girls gathered around me to see what all the fuss was about....girls?.....girls!...my mind was a blank except for thoughts of the girls.:) What snake ? What rain? Ah my Keva come be my friend, lets talk......
Today on my walk we noticed some new birds fluttering around the porch. Meowmy realized we have a new nest beside the door behind the porch light. It has some new eggs in it so the birds are nervous when we are near. They looked a bit like sparrows. I need to watch them some more before I'm sure....I may have to watch them for a loooong time. :)

Happy Independence Day! Tonight I was the Cabana Boy!

I really like walking in the tall grass. Meowmy calls it prairie grass because she's a flat lander. That means she is from the flat prairie part of the US. I like the bugs that fly up out of the grass. I pounce on them if I can. Along the driveway there is a storm drain that another cat had marked. I could smell his mark so I rubbed my face on the grate to let him know I stopped by. It has big squares in it and I rubbed until my head went through the hole. Meowmy was afraid I would get my head stuck so she said I couldn't do that again.

I had to wait a few days for my next walk. It rained and rained and rained. It made the breeze that comes in the window smell good. I like to sit in the window and watch the birds come to the birdbath. Meowmy put me in my harness today. It felt strange and I did the crouching tiger walk again. I wanted to go in or under the car. Meowmy said no and made a clicking noise with her tongue to correct me. I wasn't giving up that easy. I have excellent powers of persuasion. I circled around and tried again and again. Each time Meowmy clicked her tongue and moved me away. She wasn't buying today either. I sat under the apple tree and watched some dragonflies. She carried me down the drive and we walked back up to the house in the grass.

When we got near to the garden we saw a Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) dart out of the Iris. You can click on its name to go to a webpage to see what it looks like and hear its song. That gave Meowmy an idea. She put me on some rocks by the Iris so she could take a pretty photo of my eyes with the Iris. Pffft, no paparazzi today. I'm not feeling predisposed to collaboration........

Nice iris and she was right they would have looked great with my eyes......ladies love my limpid blue mesmerizing eyes. ;)

We moved to the front porch to bird watch. I settled in and watched for the Phoebe I had seen before. It wasn't long before she was in and out to her nest. We had a nice surprise visit from a Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura) and a Baltimore Oriel (Icterus galbula). The Oriel was too fast to snap his photo this time.
An American Robin flew in and the babies made quite a racket clamoring for a meal. They are up over the door and I had to look back at them. After their mom flew away I turned myself around so I could watch them.
Back to harness and leash training, sorry I got off topic. I like to talk....especially to the ladies. ;) Hello Ladies Merrrow.
Today Meowmy put my harness on and then she attached a lead to it. When I saw it I could tell it was the same as the harness and I wanted to chew it. Meowmy said I was a goober. That doesn't sound very distinguished o_0. She opened the door and said lets go outside. Hmmm maybe not today. I really feel like I should lay down...NOW. I tried but she wasn't buying. She scooped me up and carried me outside. I looked around a little in my crouching tiger imitation. Then I tried again....Meowmy its time for me to lie down...NOW. She still wasn't buying. She scooped me up and gave me some lovin'. She said maybe I would feel more comfortable if we went to the front. I sit and look out at the front yard from the office window. We went down the drive part way and I walked back up. It was good and I wasn't as afraid.

I wanted to go under the car and hide but I wasn't allowed to. Kate got some chairs for the porch and I sat in Meowmy's lap and watched the birds. Fascinating, I like bird watching from a lap. I get to combine two of my favorite things, being loved on and birds.

See that bird on the roof? It's checking us out to see if we are a danger. It wants to come to its nest above my head on top of the porch column. The nest is really pretty. It's made out of green moss from the woods around our house. She decided we were okay and flew on in.

I'm new to bird watching being that I'm not even a year old yet. Meowmy helped me out and looked it up. We think it's an Eastern Phoebe Worn Summer (Sayornis phoebe) of the flycatcher family. Meowmy found a website where you can listen to its song. I jumped up onto her desk and looked around the speaker trying to find that little bird that was singing. Click on the birds name to go to the webpage and hear its song.
I learned today that Keva and I have something in common. We both have a thing for plastic bags. Today I had quite the adventure with one. Meowmy was unpacking groceries and I jumped up on the island to see what she got. There was a sea of wonderful plastic bags! I nosed around in them and then I got scared by the amount of rustling noise and jumped down. I was horrified that the noise was after me. I took off running to get away from it and it wouldn't go away! Ahhhh! I ran around and around the kitchen island then off into the family room, through the dining room, and back into the kitchen as fast as my paws could move. The noise was right behind me all the way! It was so loud I couldn't hear Meowmy or Kate calling to me to. I ran into Meowmy's office and She and Kate closed the door and talked softly to me. As I listened they reached to me and tore the handle of the bag. After petting me until I was okay they started laughing. They said I was super cat and the bag was my cape. I had my head through the handle and the bag flew behind me above my back. I don't see what's so funny about being attacked by a ruthless grocery bag. Kate said I was smart not to put it on like a space suit......hmmm the bag was opaque. That would have been really dumb and painful to run in. I would have hit the walls and furniture. :( Meowmy told everyone in the family that they have to be extra careful with plastic bags now that Keva and I are here so we stay safe.
Meowmy brought me something I've never seen before, a blue harness. I wanted to chew on it. She said I was supposed to wear it. When she tried to put it on me I squirmed and rolled. She said I was silly putty. Once I had it on I still wanted to chew it so I rolled and turned trying to get it into my mouth, I couldn't. I could feel it on my back so I dropped low and tried to crawl out from under it. But then I saw Da Bird. Man I love Da Bird! I forgot all about the harness and played. Meowmy left the harness on me for about 5 hours and I got used to it really fast. I didn't even feel it anymore.....she had me wear it a couple more days inside while I was playing. It's no big deal. I don't mind it. Oh oh oh....I just played with something even better then Da Bird! I'm really hard on the feathers so Meowmy ran out of replacement birds, lol. Well she put on the sparkler attachment. Man I could not leave it alone. I was mesmerized and play with it every chance I can. That is when I 'm not moochin' for love. Meowmy has a nick name for me. It's KeeBee because I'm always buzzing around the house so I know everything that is going on.

When I first arrived here Meowmy just let me get used to my new family. I'm the kind of guy who likes lovin'. I am constantly rubbin' and moochin' after everybody for some petting. I'm a bit of a busy boy. I'm not one to lay about when I hear someone in the house. I have to get in there with them and get as much lovin' from them as I can. :). Oh and I love the girls! I'm a real Romeo with the ladies. I play it cool, stretch out on the floor in a submissive posture. I won over Maeve real fast and Magi too. Emma's okay with me as long as I don't get in her face. She'll hiss at me if I do. Sometimes I forget 'cause I just want to rub and love on everyone. That little Keva is a pip. Meowmy underestimated my maturity and knowledge when I first met the girls. Maeve and I did the Tango and that put an end to my romancing. Meowmy doesn't let me be alone with Maeve or Keva anymore. I tried to get Keva too but Meowmy was watching and scooped her away. Now Keva growls at me, lol, not a serious growl but a playful one. She visits me when I am in the run and growls the whole time and sticks her paws in. She's a silly girl. I don't mind her growl. I call to her if she leaves me. I really want to be her friend.
